



Klothild de Baar is one of Canada’s most prolific, contemporary writers with over ninety titles to her credit, including translations into some eleven languages.

She grew up in Europe and was educated in several countries, obtaining a doctorate in the United States.
She has written and published professional works as an economist, and children's stories, novels, novellas, over three-hundred short stories, a trilogy of poetry, epistolaries, as well as the definitive book on Canada’s culinary culture.
Her books have been finalists for international prizes and included in long- and short lists for literary awards.
She is married and lives and works in Canada. Klothild de Baar is a pseudonym.

Saying farewell to her Horben in Canada, their beloved country home in Perkins, Quebec, destroyed by a tragic fire on Wednesday, February 29, 2012
“ … I had a Castle in Canada, in the foothills of the Laurentians, in the storied Valley of the Monts. Proudly it stood at the top of the Lafrenière Hill we renamed Lindenberg, with its white battlements, balconies and tower rooms, its twenty-nine rooms and roomettes and secret passages and staircases, leading to hidden rooms, its ballrooms and the “Vatican Library” that held some two thousand books, perhaps the greatest private collection of European, Asian, and Biblical dynasties this side of the Atlantic. The style of these ancient families formed the theme of every room, the deep black pool we shared with the goldfish outside, the skating pond in the woods by the white Grecian gazebo , the Evensong Cottage on the ravine, overlooking a mysterious mountain pond with its forest creatures we named the “Sea of the Passed Souls, ” the Painter’s Cottage, and on the other end of the land, at the very top of the hill, the St. Wendelin’s Chapel overlooking the valleys and precious villages of the Outaouais … ” Excerpt from I Had A Castle in Canada
